Couchsurfing has become one of the major ways of staying and meeting people whilst providing you with free accommodation. On the main website they claim that you have friends all over the world and you just haven’t met them yet. This is so true. People who put their name down to host couchsurfers are probably mostly travellers themselves, are interesting people looking to make new friends and are happy to share their space. It is a great way to help others and provide a safe haven for travellers.

I have one friend who stayed with a lady in Central America and ended up staying there for two months. They became really good pals.

At you should take the time to read their information about safety and reading reviews. This is a great way to see the world on a small budget. Always have a backup plan incase things don’t work out the way you’d hoped.

Personally, I would plan a combination of couchsurfing with help exchange and cheap hostel accommodation to give yourself time to reflect in between stays. Always be grateful for the opportunity to stay and maybe take some small gift from your home country to give away.

Put yourself out there…
