The Urban Campsite that runs for a short time each year over the summer in Amsterdam might give you your fill of funky camps. Artists design sleeping quarters and then they are rented out to holiday makers. You have a unique opportunity to stay inside the art pieces themselves.
The organisation chooses an unused location of the city and let the artists set up camp for you.
Or what about staying in a luxury hotel that is a replica of the Titanic in Kopak, Turkey?
To expensive? What about a hostel in an old prison in Stockholm?
Or does an estate mansion closely resembling a castle appeal to you as a hostel destination?
Or what about a boot and breakfast in New Zealand?
Or camping underground in the opal mining town of Coober Pedy?
This is one place that I will definitely be saving up for- watching out for the northern lights – Aurora Borealis in Finland. Not for your normal backpacker budget though.
